This first week is, by far, the hardest. Dave even warns that some people may not be ready for this chapter and that if you are searching for a feel good chapter to move on ...so I am issuing the same warning. If you are having a tough day and are needing some comfort...STOP READING! If you are ready to face truth and try to move forward, come with me.
Chapter 1- The Reason No One Wants to Hear
There are 3 assumptions behind the question "Why do bad things happen to good people?"
- The world is full of suffering and evil.
- God created the world.
- Therefore, God is to blame!
- God created the world good. The world He created was Paradise-perfect and free from evil.
- God created people with the ability to choose (Gen. 1:27). God could have created us so that we couldn't sin, but then we would have been like puppets and we would not have given God pleasure.
- People choose evil ( Gen. 2:16-17) (Gen 3:6). This makes me think about a child. You don't have to teach a child to be bad and to misbehave, they already know how to do this. You do, however, have to teach a child to be good.
- Their choice brought evil into the world (Rom. 5:12). When we are tempted to blame God for all the evil in this world we need to stop ourselves and realize that it was humans who brought evil and sin into our world.
- Their choice has had lasting consequences (Rom 8:20-22). The world is no longer good.
We are sinners by nature. If it had been me in that garden with the fruit that had been forbidden to eat, would I? Probably so! I am not so good with boundaries and challenges like that. Especially with a snake tempting me. Yep, a sinner by nature.
At the end of the day instead of asking ourselves why bad things happen to good people, we should realize that we aren't so good. The more appropriate question is why do so many good things happen to bad people? We, being sinful creatures, have made a mess of things and we should look around and find the things to be thankful for. The gifts God has given us that we don't deserve: a husband that loves me, family that supports me, a roof over my head, food on my table, and most importantly, the gift of salvation.
I told you that this first chapter wasn't easy! But I promise you it gets easier, more encouraging and not so convicting. If you stuck with it I am so proud of you! Sometimes the truth ain't pretty, but sometimes it's exactly what we need to hear. Praying for EACH of you today!

That is something your have to be ready for. It takes a strong person to be able to look inward to the question huh?
It's a powerful message and I love how you ended this post. You're so right about being thankful for the gifts God has given us.
Admittedly I think of the pain of losing my Mom more than I spend on gratitude right now. And I already know how much better I am when I think of those gifts from God. I need to remember the words of this post and do that much more often.
I'm so glad you're writing about this book!
I have to find my book!!!!!!!
I remember reading that, though...and even though you are right that it is hard, it really helped me realize that when people always tell us how shocked that something like *this* happened to *us*, I always think, "Well...why wouldn't it happen to us???? We're no better than those poor little innocent babies that languish in an orphanage, or die under rubble from a catastrophic event..."
I'd like to think that I wouldn't have eaten the apple...but...what would have made me any different? They were in the VERY PRESENCE of GOD and still did.
So...
Yeah, gotta find my book!
xoxo
Such an insightful post - particularly your line 'We, being sinful creatures, have made a mess of things and we should look around and find the things to be thankful for. ' When I was in college, I read the book 'When Bad Things Happen to Good Poeple' by Harold Kushner. The book made me think along the same lines that you discussed. Thanks for sharing your study!

I think on a daily basis why do bad things happen to good people. I think I need to change my way of thinking to why do so many good things happen to bad people. I also need to be thankful for all of the blessings I have. Thank you for posting this! I can't wait to read more about what the Dave Early has to say!
Hmm, interesting perspective. I will have to give this a little more thought.
That is rather deep and insightful. I may have to check out this book when I feel ready for it.

I think it's a good chapter and it speaks the truth!!
Hm. It seems like an inteeresting book. Kind of an eye opener.
My chapter one would probably say "Bad stuff happens to good people because shit happens."
I like your thought of instead of asking ourselves why bad things happen to good people, we should realize that we aren't so good. Yeah, I wonder too why good things happen to bad people. It is so easy to look at all the bad things that happen to us, but like you said, we should look at all the good things that God has given us, especially when we don't deserve them. We need to take time to appreciate and thank him for it.
Thanks for sharing this study!
